Abstract

In the treatment of a tow of regenerated protein fibres for a considerable time in a liquid treating bath, flotation of the tow in the bath is ensured by first treating the tow with a substantially non-volatile, water-immiscible liquid which is inert to the fibres and which has a specific gravity not greater than 1.1 so that the liquid is entrained in the fibres, and then feeding the tow in convolutions on to the surface of the liquid treating bath, allowing the tow to accumulate in the bath for a sufficient time to produce the desired effect, and then continuously withdrawing the tow at a rate substantially equal to the rate of feed by removing it from the underside of the mass of convolutions. Preferred water-immiscible liquids are higher paraffin oils such as white oil. The liquid treating bath may comprise a hardening liquid, an insolubilizing liquid or an esterification liquid, as described in Specification 690,492.
