734,886. Spring suspensions; suspension of vehicle bodies. TOLEDO WOODHEAD SPRINGS, Ltd. April 5, 1954 [April 23, 1953], No. 11190/53. Classes 103 (6) and 108 (2). An auxiliary attachment for main leaf springs E of vehicles, consists of a coil spring A having means at one end by which it can be attached to the main spring E at or near the outer end thereof and means at the other end by which it can be attached to a point having little or no movement relative to the axle of the vehicle, the distance between the points of attachment being such that on deflection of the main spring E, the coil spring A exerts tensional pressure on the main spring in a direction tending to prevent its deflection, such pressure increasing as the deflection increases. As shown, an end a of the coil spring is attached to a U-bolt C having a bar C<SP>1</SP> adjustably mounted thereon to which is pivotally connected a member D which is hooked over the end of the main spring .E. The other end of the coil spring is attached to a bracket F<SP>1</SP> clamped to the main spring on the remote side of the wheel axle. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the bracket Fl is adapted to bear on the axle casing. In another arrangement, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), a hook member is interposed between the U- bolt and that end of the coil spring and a second U-shaped member is secured to the bracket F<SP>1</SP> and extends over the axle. In a similar arrangement, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the bracket F<SP>1</SP> is dispensed with and the second U- shaped member is bent round the axle casing and secured by across bar between the legs of the U. In other arrangements, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), for heavy vehicle springs, the coil spring is connected to the attachment points by means similar to that of Figs. 5 and 6. Two coil springs may be arranged side-by-side, the ends being connected to single attachment means and the coil springs may be preloaded.
