In a wheel and brake assembly comprising a pair of axially movable wheels rotatable about, and spaced apart along, a common axis, friction braking surfaces are disposed adjacent at least one face of each wheel and are applied by a common brake applying means so that the axial displacement of one wheel causes a similar axial displacement of the other wheel to effect braking of the latter. In the embodiment shown applied to solid rubber wheels 1 mounted on a common axle 2 and adapted for attachment to furniture or domestic appliances, two resiliently mounted brackets 3, spaced apart by rod 4, are secured to the underside of the piece of furniture or domestic appliance. Mounted on the axle 2 adjacent the outer face of each wheel is an end member in the form of a plate 5 which is retained by a nut 6. Between each wheel and the adjacent bracket 3 there is an axially movable plate 7 which carries a pin 8 extending through an aperture in the vertical arm of the bracket 3 to prevent rotation of the plate 7 ; the outer faces of these plates serving as braking surfaces for the wheels. In operation, when the actuating pedal 12 is depressed, the cam 9, attached to the pedal 12 and prevented from moving to the left by a rigid spacing tube 13, rotates on the axle 2 and forces the axially slidable cam 10 to move to the right to cause the adjacent plate 7 to engage the inner face of its wheel 1 so as to displace the wheel axially and force its outer face against the end plate 5. This axial displacement of the wheel causes the whole axle to be moved to the right through the brackets 3 until the opposite end plate 5 displaces the other wheel axially to force its inner face into engagement with the other plate 7. During the movement of the cam 10 to the right, its annular shoulder engages the inner face of the vertical arm of the supporting bracket 3 and flexes the bracket arm outwards. The bracket arm thus serves as a spring which tends to close the cams when the brake is applied.
