Abstract

Rosin amine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0734665/IV (b)/1> where R is an abietyl, hydroabietyl or dehydroabietyl radical, X is a hydrogen atom or a radical CH2.R1, and R1 is a radical attached to -CH2-by a carbon atom having at least one hydrogen atom, and containing a keto group in a -position to said carbon atom, and corresponding mixed compounds or mixtures of compounds in which R has two or all three of the values indicated, are corrosion inhibitors in the acid pickling of metals (see Group II). The compounds are prepared by reacting together a rosin amine, formaldehyde and an a -ketone, i.e. a ketone having the -CO-group in a -position to a -CH2- group. Examples of such ketones are: acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, isophorone, mesityl oxide, diacetone alcohol, pentane 2 : 4-dione, acetonyl acetone, cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, and acetophenone. The reaction is carried out in acid medium using hydrochloric, hydrobromic, acetic or sulphuric acid and the mixture is refluxed for up to 24 hours. An excess of ketone and/or formaldehyde is used and facilitates the reaction. Examples show the preparation of the compounds using certain of the specified reactants.ALSO:Rosin amine derivative (see Group IV (b) of the general formula. <F\1> where R\ is an abiteyl, hydroabietyl or dehydroabietyl radical, X is a hydrogen atom or the radical CH2.R1, and R1 is a radical attached to -CH2- by a carbon atom having at least one hydrogen atom and containing a keto group in x-position to said carbon atom, and corresponding mixed compounds or mixtures of compounds in which R has two or all three of the values indicated, are corrosion inhibitors in the acid pickling of metals, particularly steel. R1 is derived from ketones such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, isophorone, mesityl oxide, diacetone alcohol, pentane 2 : 4-dione, acetonyl acetone, cylcoentanone, cyclohexanone, and acetophenone. The compounds may be used alone or admixed with other substances such as copper salts or thiourea and inhibit the corrision of acid, on magnesium, aluminium and zinc as well as ferriferous metals. Examples show the prepartion of compounds of the invention using certain of the specified reactants, and also a method of evaluating the inhibiting effect.
