Abstract

Polycondensates, suitable for the production of moulded bodies, are made from a methylene-, alkylidene or aralkylidene-bis-halogeno carboxylic acid amide of formula <FORM:0734305/IV (a)/1> (where n is an integer and R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group) by reaction with liquid ammonia to form the corresponding monoamine and heating this amine in a stream of nitrogen first under atmospheric pressure and then under reduced pressure at below 250 DEG C. in presence of a small proportion of a hydroxide, carbonate or hydrosulphide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal whereby hydrogen chloride is eliminated. Examples (1), (2) and (3): The mono-amines obtained from methylene-, ethylidene- and benzylidene-bis-chloropropionamide are polycondensed in the presence of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and sodium hydrosulphide respectively.
