Abstract

1337285 Tertiary amines PIERREFITTEAUBY 21 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969 9 Dec 1970] 60493/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Tertiary amines are prepared by reacting an alkyl halide containing at least 50% of a 1- haloalkane with a solution of at least 2 moles of a secondary amine RR<SP>1</SP>NH (in which R and R<SP>1</SP> are C 1-18 saturated or unsaturated alkyl radicals), per mole of alkyl halide, in an aprotic polar solvent which is capable of dissolving the reactants but not appreciably, in the cold, the product tertiary amine; the reaction being carried out under a pressure of above atmospheric but not higher than 4 bars gauge. Suitable solvents are dimethylformamide, hexamethylphosphorotriamide, tetrahydrofuran and N- methylpyrrolidone. In a continuous process in which the weight ratio of solvent to alkyl halide is 2-5 : 1, the circulating reaction mixture is subjected to a gradually increasing temperature and is then cooled and decanted continuously from separated product.
