Headings C2C and C2J. [Also in Division A5] Novel trichlorothiophene-2-carboxylic acid amides of the Formula (I) wherein each of R and R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted C 1-6 aliphatic, alkoxyalkyl, optionally substituted aryl, optionally substituted heterocyclic, or optionally substituted cycloaliphatic radical, or R and R<SP>1</SP> complete a heterocyclic ring, are obtained by reacting trichlorothiophene-2-carboxylic acid chloride with ammonia or appropriate amines. The compounds have pesticidal properties (see Division A5). Trichlorothiophene-2-carboxylic acid chloride, used as starting material, may be obtained by reacting tetrachlorothiophene with magnesium in deperoxidized tetrahydrofuran to give an organo-magnesium compound, reacting this with carbon dioxide and hydrolysing the product and reacting the trichlorothiophene- 2-carboxylic acid so produced with thionyl chloride.
