Abstract

Seeds, bulbs and tubers are protected from attack by fungi, &c by treatment with an organic tin compound of the general formula R1R2R3SnX where R1, R2 and R3 each represent a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl radical linked by means of a carbon atom to the tin, and X represents an inorganic or organic group containing more than one atom, which is linked to the tin by an atom other than carbon. Specification 303,092, [Class 140], is referred to.ALSO:Surfaces are protected from attack by fungi, yeasts, bacteria, protozoa and like micro-organisms by treatment, for example coating or impregnating, with an organic tin compound of the general formula R1R2R3SnX where R1, R2 and R3 each represent a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl radical linked by means of a carbon atom to the tin, and X represents an inorganic or organic group containing more than one atom, which is linked to the tin by an atom other than carbon. X may represent OH, O-acyl, O-aryl, O-alkyl, SH, S-alkyl, S-aryl, SO2-alkyl, SO2-aryl, NHSO2-alkyl, NHSO2-aryl, the alkyl and aryl groups being substituted or not. X may also represent sulphate or nitrate. The nature of X affects solubility. Thus tin triethyl hydroxide and its salts are fairly soluble in water while tin triethyl oleate and linoleate are perfectly soluble in oils and solvents for paint but are insoluble in water. The following compounds are referred to with respect to the influence on activity of the R groups: trimethyl, triethyl, tri-n-propyl, tri-iso-propyl, tri-n-butyl, tri-tert-butyl, triphenyl, tri-(dimethyl-ethyl) and diethyl-bromophenyl tin hydroxide. The compounds may be applied by impregnating, spraying or dusting. Substances to raise the adhesive and dispersive power and inert solvents or thinners, and carriers or fillers may also be added. Solutions of tin triethyl hydroxide in water and tin triethyl acetate in acetone are mentioned for treating timber. Specification 303,092, [Class 140], is referred to.
