Abstract

734,106. Sports grounds. MULLARD, S. R. July 5, 1954 [July 3, 1953], No. 18527/53. Class 132(1). Pieces of relatively hard material 6 are embedded or inlaid in a relatively soft surface layer 5 to form a sports ground or the like. As shown, layer 5 is covered by a thin coating 7 e.g. of bitumen emulsion. Layer 5 may consist of a composition comprising, by volume, 30 parts of medium coarse vermiculite, 19 parts cement and 6 parts of a water emulsion of bitumen. This composition is spread on a bed 8, e.g. of ash, clinker, concrete or the like, and after hardening slightly holes are formed in it, after which it is allowed to harden completely. The holes are then filled up with a composition comprising 1 1b. cement to 8 fluid ounces of a 10 per cent solution of cement hardener which forms plugs 6. These plugs contract on setting and the recesses so formed are filled with bitumen emulsion. Instead of plugs continuous intersecting strips of harder material may be formed.
