In a tunnel kiln car superstructure of the type comprising a number of pillars supported and located on the car base with each pillar formed of a number of superposed sections and with supports for bats at desired heights, the pillar sections of Fig. 4 have upper and lower flanges g and h, formed respectively with rounded projecting parts i and with V-shaped recesses j radiating equiangularly from the axis of the section, so that, at the junction between two sections Fig. 7, the inter-engaging projections i and recesses provide line contacts, the adjacent flanges g and h being slightly spaced from one another at k. Fig. 1 shows the assembled car superstructure in which double pillars a are provided at'the ends and the middle, alternating with single pillars b, the bats c being laid on the pillar section flanges. The tops of the pillars are completed by collars t on the flanges of which are seated the uppermost bats. In a modification, Figs. 8-13 (not shown), the projections and recesses take the form of an equilateral triangle. The section joints may 'comprise one or a row of hemispherical projections engaging a similar number of pyramidal recesses.
