Abstract

733,749. Barometers. WHITEHORN, H. K. May 21, 1954 [Sept. 12, 1953; May 14, 1954], Nos. 25269/53 and 14279/54. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXXV] To enable a barometer to be read more accurately, its upper portion is formed helically, Fig. 7, or in zigzag arrangement, or in tree-branch style, Fig. 6, said upper portion for a mercury-filled barometer being a zone between about 25 inches and 33 inches above the level of the mercury in the base. The upper and lower ends of the helical arrangement may be mounted in bearings 1 such that the barometer can be rotated about its vertical axis. Fig. 11 illustrates a helically shaped barometer of varying diameter, the larger diameter being in the range more usually seen; this form conserves mercury. A circular scale is provided inside the helix. To maintain a constant level in the mercury reservoir 7, a metallic point 14, Fig. 7, is used. When the mercury level contacts this point an electric motor 13 causes a reservoir 9 to be lowered, the reservoir 9 being connected to the reservoir 7 by a tube 8. When the mercury level in the reservoir 7 falls so that it no longer contacts the point 4, the electric motor causes the reservoir 9 to rise. This action maintains a constant level in the reservoir 7. As an alternative to the point 14, a float may be provided on the surface of the mercury, said float carrying means for actuating contacts controlling the electric motor.
