A contact - thermometer has a contact wire C arranged to be engaged by the mercury at an adjustable temperature, the wire being attached at its upper end to a triangular or other non- circular member C<SP>1</SP> housed in a similarlyshaped tube B which is connected to the mercury-containing tube A by a bridge tube B<SP>2</SP> through which wire C extends into tube A. Member. C<SP>1</SP> is formed with an external spiral groove engaging the spirals of a wire D which is attached at its upper end to an armature D<SP>1</SP>, and at its lower end to an insulating cylinder d3, surrounding wire C. A contact a<SP>1</SP> connected to the mercury is connected to a terminal d and wire C is connected via a surrounding coil b<SP>2</SP> and wire b to a terminal d<SP>2</SP>. The terminals are housed in an insulating cover d<SP>4</SP> supporting an insulating sleeve D<SP>2</SP> around which is a circular magnet D<SP>5</SP>. Rotation of the magnet causes corresponding rotation of armature D<SP>1</SP> and spiral D, thereby causing rectilinear movement of member C<SP>1</SP> and contact C which are prevented from rotation. Member C<SP>1</SP> moves opposite a scale B<SP>1</SP> graduated similarly to a scale A<SP>1</SP> opposite the lower end of wire C, so that wire C is adjusted to a selected temperature.
