[Also in Group XXXIV] A lubricating device for use in gas storage installations, for lubricating the packing between the movable piston and the shell of a gas holder, comprises a lubricating pump or the like which receives intermittent impulses from the movement of the piston, this movement storing potential energy which is released at intervals. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a gas holder 1 is provided with a piston 4, and packing 5 which slides along the shell 3 of the holder. A framework consisting of parts 6, 7, 27 supports a lubricating pump 25 with reservoir 24 and pulleys 14, 16 connected by a driving chain 15. The pulley 14 is engaged by a rope 9 which passes over pulleys 13, 12 and a weighted pulley 10 and is connected to the top of the gas holder. The pulley 16 is coaxial with a pulley 17 provided with a freely suspended arm 18 which has a grip pin adapted during rotation of the pulley to engage a driving lever 19 on the lubricating pump and raise it up until eventually the lever 19 is released and swings back aided by a counterweighted lever 21 to operate the pump and discharge lubricant to the packing. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, motion is transmitted to the pulley 17 by means of a roller 30 pressed against the shell 3 of the holder by a counterweight 28. The device is operated during both up and down movements of the piston, but ratchet-and-pawl means may be provided to cause operation of the device on movement of the piston in one direction only. During upward movement of the piston the grip pin 40, Fig. 4. of the arm 18 engages a rail 50 provided with a guide 51 which can be adjusted to vary the swing of the lever 19 before release. During downward movement of the piston the grip pin 40 engages an adjustable guide 41. In another arrangement the drive of the lubrication pump is effected by means of a rope provided at intervals with knots or balls which in turn, as the rope ascends, engage the enlarged end of a slotted driving lever on the pump, releasing the end after having traversed a certain distance.
