Abstract
733,433. Electrically heated fabrics. HOBOURN AERO COMPONENTS, Ltd. Sept. 18, 1953 [June 19, 1952], No. 15504/52. Addition to 708,542. Class 39 (3). A flexible electric heater according to the parent Specification, i.e. a ribbon or cord 2 made by braiding one or more heating resistance wires 3 with strands of inextensible flexible fibre such as glass fibre so as to expose portions of the wire at the surface of the cord or ribbon and to prevent short-circuiting selfcontact of the wire, has an all-over covering 4 of flexible heat-resisting electrically-insulating material which is stranded and/or fibrous, is air-permeable and is applied to envelop the heater. The sheath 4 is of spun asbestos or fibre glass strands braided around the heater. The sheath cannot easily be removed, but allows expansion of the resistance wire. The braided ribbon or cord may be strands of asbestos with a core 1 comprising one or more threads of spun glass. The element may be used in drying machines or convection heaters. According to the Provisional Specification, the heater is mounted under tension by stretching it between end plates supported on a rod, and one end plate may be outwardly biased by a spring washer interposed between the plate and a collar on the rod.
