Abstract

733,232. Variable-pitch propellers. SLACK & PARR (MARINE), Ltd. Oct. 7, 1953 [Oct. 7, 1952], No. 25063/52. Class 114. Control gear for a variable-pitch marine propeller comprises a thrust bearing 23 at the front end of a reduction gear housing 11 and mounted on a control member 14 coaxial with the propeller shaft 10, and a pivoted link 37 connected to the bearing and to a screw and nut or other mechanism for effecting movement of a free end 40 of the link 37 to move the control member 14 axially and so vary the pitch of the propeller. A rotatable sprocket wheel 48 attached to a projecting end 46 of the screw 43 of the screw and nut mechanism rotates the screw to traverse the nut 42 which is connected by an arm to the free end of the link 37. The link has pivot pins 38 intermediate its length, secured to the thrust bearing housing 31. As shown, two parallel links 37 are used, one at each side of the screw and the thrust bearing, the links being pivoted to arms 35 pivoted on a pin 32 extending across an extension 17 of the housing 11; the screw 43 is parallel to the control member 14. The thrust block housing 31 slides on guide rods 51 which pass through apertures in lugs on the end-plate of the housing. Oil may be supplied to the propeller through a pipe 54 and a bore in the control member 14.
