Abstract

733,135. Bottling. SOC. NOUVELLE DES ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS F. WENGER and ETABLISSEMENTS VIDUS-HUET & CIE. Dec. 14, 1953 [Dec. 13, 1952], No. 34812/53. Class 125 (2). Apparatus for filling bottles with liquids comprises a liquid reservoir 1 in which a constant level of liquid is maintained by a float 5 and in which a reduced pressure is maintained by suction applied to a connection 2 and filling heads each comprising a sleeve 6 extending upwardly from the reservoir bottom, a conical member 8 disposed over the sleeve and a tube 9 extending into the bottle for conveying the displaced gas into the upper part of the reservoir. In operation, outside air flows through the tube 9 and the liquid inside the member 8 has the level B-B. When a bottle is raised to engage the gasket 12, Fig. 5, at the top of sleeve 6, the reduced pressure draws liquid up between the sleeve and the member 8 and discharges it into the bottle until the level reaches the bottom of tube 9, into which a small quantity enters. When the bottle is lowered, the atmospheric pressure forces down the liquid level under the member 8 and causes the liquid in tube 9 to be forced out of the top and back into the reservoir. In the practical construction, Fig. 5, the gasket 12 is carried by a body 13, the member 8 is attached to the tube 9 and is connected to the sleeve 6 by a bayonet joint 8a and the bottle is guided by a sleeve 11 slidable within the sleeve 6. Ribs 14 space the member 8 from the body 13 and the tube 9 carries a deflector 15 for the incoming liquid. In a modification, Fig. 10, the gasket 12 is carried by a body 19 formed with passages 21, 20 for the liquid flow. A conical member 16 overlies the body 19 and its upper part 17 co-operates with tube 9 to form a restricted, calibrated opening communicating with the gas space of the reservoir. This allows a higher vacuum to be maintained in the reservoir.
