A machine for bending wire and cutting the wire to a predetermined length is characterized in that the wire is fed by rollers the feed being halted, by effecting a temporary cessation of the pressure exerted by the rollers on the wire, in synchronism with the bringing into operation of means for shearing the wire. Wire 19 from straightening rolls 20 is fed by opposed intergeared rolls 17, 18 to bending means comprising a fixed roll 22 and an adjustable roll 23 and shearing means 49, 50 for severing the bent, e.g. coiled, wire from the incoming stock. The lower feed roll 17 is journalled in the machine frame 2 while the upper feed roll 18 is journalled in an arm 32 pivoted at 33 to the machine frame and supported by a spring 34. A lever 38 pivoted at 39 and urged by a spring 40 normally holds the arm 32 down but is periodically rocked by a cam 41, on a shaft 42 driven from the feed roll drive, to allow the spring 34 to lift the arm 32 and thus halt the wire feed. The shearing means actuated to cut the wire at the time the feed thereof is stopped includes a knife 49, co-operating with a fixed knife 50, carried by a bolt 48 moved forward and back by cams 47, 46, respectively, on the shaft 42 engaging rollers 52, 51, respectively, on the bolt.
