732,576. Joint-making packing. REINZ DICHTUNGS-GES. Dec. 5, 1952 [Dec. 7, 1951], No. 30975/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 122 (3). A joint-making packing comprises a metal base and a packing mass, preferably on each side of the base, the mass/comprising binding agents and fillers, more especially an elastic binding agent such as rubber and/or artificial rubber and/or synthetic resin, and a filler containing or consisting of asbestos fibres, preferably a filler consisting of asbestos fibres and powdered mineral fibres, for example powdered asbestos, wherein the base has a compressibility of at least 7 per cent but not more than 25 per cent, and preferably not more than 15 per cent, and a resilience of at least 0.3 per cent, all based on the initial thickness of the base, and wherein the complete packing has a compressibility of more than 7 per cent, preferably 7 to 15 per cent, and a resilience of at least 0.5 per cent, preferably at least 0.6 per cent, all based on the initial thickness of the packing. The base, which preferably has an overall thickness of at least half that of the packing, may'be a steel sheet deformed to have resilience by forming, on one or both sides of the sheet, resilient protruberances, for example of semi-spherical shape, or resilient tongues; or the base may be a laminar structure formed by two such resiliently ,deformed steel sheets separated by a layer of the packing mass used for covering the base. The methods of assessing the specified compressibilities and resiliences are described in the Specification. Specification 720,400, [Group VIII], is referred to.
