Abstract
To clarify or maintain the clarity of wines &c. they are contacted with a sulphonated polystyrene ion-exchange resin, e.g. a sulphonated polymer of styrene and di-vinyl benzene. Further examples of suitable ion-exchange resins are given in Specification 577,707, [Group IV]. Sulphur dioxide, e.g. gaseous, or a compound containing available sulphur dioxide such as sodium or potassium metal-sulphite, sodium bisulphite, a sulphite or a thiosulphate may be added to the wine &c. From 50 to 450 parts of sulphur dioxide may be added to each million parts of wine &c. The resin may be regenerated with a non-acidic, e.g. neutral, aqueous solution of a sodium salt, e.g. sodium chloride, sulphate or nitrate.
