Abstract

A smooth, hard, water-resistant film-casting surface is obtained by coating a film-casting support, e.g. an endless belt or a drum, with a substitution derivative of cellulose, converting the surface of the coating into regenerated cellulose and then treating the regenerated cellulose with a cross-linking agent therefor, e.g. a dialdehyde. Specified substitution derivatives of cellulose, which may be applied to the support as solutions in acetone, methylene chloride, acetone-alcohol, nitromethane, dioxane or benzene-methanol, are cellulose esters such as the nitrate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetatepropionate and acetate-butyrate and cellulose ethers such as ethyl cellulose. Superficial regeneration of the cellulose may be effected by treatment with sulphuric acid or ammonium hydrosulphide when the coating is cellulose nitrate, with sodium or potassium hydroxide when the coating is a carboxylic ester of cellulose, and with hydrochloric or hydriodic acid when the coating is a cellulose ether, and these reagents may be applied to the coating from aqueous or alcoholic solutions or, particularly when the support is a drum, they may be applied in a viscous dope containing an inert film-forming material to form a film upon the coating which film is subsequently stripped therefrom as described in Specification 693,717. Specified dialdehydes are glyoxal, succinaldehyde (in the form of its inner acetal, diethoxy tetrahydrofurane), a , g -dimethyl-a -methoxy-methyl-glutaraldehyde and a -hydroxy adipaldehyde. The dialdehydes may be applied to the regenerated cellulose surface from an aqueous medium containing, if desired, an acidic acetalization catalyst, such as oxalic, sulphuric, formic or p-toluene sulphonic acid, or they may be applied in a dope containing an inert film-forming material, e.g. cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, nitrocellulose, sodium cellulose sulphate or ethyl cellulose, to form a film upon the regenerated cellulose surface, which film is subsequently stripped therefrom. The cross-linking reaction is effected by a heat treatment.
