Abstract

Modified polyvinyl acetoacetate is made by reacting diketene with a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing 10 to 80% by weight of vinyl alcohol units and 90 to 20% by weight of oxyalkyl units. The modified polyvinyl alcohol may be made either by hydrolysing a graft polymer of a vinyl ester on a polyalkylene glycol, or by oxyalkylating polyvinyl alcohol. The reaction between diketene and the modified polyvinyl alcohol is preferably carried out in glacial acetic acid in the presence of sodium acetate. Films cast from solutions of the resulting modified polyvinyl acetoacetate crosslink on drying. The examples describe reacting diketene with hydrolysed graft polymers of vinyl acetate on polyethylene glycol and oxyethylated polypropylene glycol, and an oxyethylated polyvinyl alcohol.
