In a stamping or forging press or hammer having a lower-die mounted on an anvil block and an upper die mounted on a movable tup which is allowed to fall by gravity, assisted if necessary by fluid pressure, and which is guided in standards 13 the upper ends of which-carry the headgear frame 12 of the press or alternatively are connected together by a tie member, rubber cushions 20, for absorbing shock, are interposed between the upper ends of the standards and the adjacent frame or member 12, each cushion having bonded to its upper and lower surfaces steel plates 21, 22 which fit respectively into recesses 18, 19 in the standard and the frame or member, the cushions being held in position by bolts 15 fitted with-rubber rebound washers 25 and nuts 24, 28. A spherical washer 23 on each bolt engages into a corresponding recess in the standard. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, for adjustable standards T3b, 14b, the rubber cushions are interposed between the standards and metal blocks 33 each having a pair of lugs 35 with transverse bores 36 which receive the screwed ends of tie-rods 43. The latter carry nuts 37, 38 with spigots 39, 41 engaging within each bore 36, and split conical spigots which are engaged by locknuts 45, 46.
