Abstract

The phosphate content of calcite-containing phosphate rock is increased by calcining said rock and subjecting the calcined product, preferably after dry-slaking (i.e. slaking with the stoichiometrical amount of water to convert the calcium oxide into hydroxide) to a dry separation treatment, e.g. air-classification, to separate the phosphate from the calcium oxide or hydroxide. If desired the air-classification may be repeated on the products to increase their purity. In the example the calcination was conducted at 900-950 DEG C. in a rotary kiln. The use of shaft kilns is mentioned. Specifications 22851/10 and 224,468, [both in Class 1 (iii)], are referred to.
