Abstract
731,998. Resilient joints. ANDRE RUBBER CO., Ltd. March 17, 1954 [April 22, 1953], No. 11085/53. Class 108 (3). [Also in Group V] The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a resilient joint of the kind comprising inner and outer rigid members 1, 5 between which is bonded an annular mass of rubber 6, the rigid members 1, 5 being cylindrical over most of their length but having progressively reduced diameters at the end portions, the mean diameter of the rubber at the end portions also being smaller, normals to the surface of the rubber at the end portions being inclined at substantially less than 90 degrees to the axis of the joint. According to the invention, the inner member 1 is disposed within the outer tubular member 5, which at this stage is wholly cylindrical, the space between the members 1, 5 being filled with rubber which is afterwards cured, the end portions of the outer member 5 then being swaged into shape. In order to inject the rubber prior to curing, the members 1, 5 are assembled in a mould, Fig. 3. Pins 2 on the ends of the member 1 are mounted in collars 10 located in the mould by a respective flange 12. The collars 10 close the ends of the annular space between the members 1, 5. A dowel 15 locates the member 5. Rubber is forced by a plunger 16 through holes 14 in the wall of the mould, and holes 7 formed in the outer member 5. The rubber may, however, be injected through holes formed in the inner member, or through the collars 10. The thickness of the rubber may be greater at the end portions.
