Abstract

[Also in Division B3] A resilient joint of the kind shown in Fig. 5, comprising two concentric part-spherical or otherwise tapering members 1, 2 with elastomeric material 5 bonded between them, is made by the following method. An initially cylindrical outer member 2, Fig. 1, is deformed radially inwardly at one end, the inner member 1 is inserted in it through the other end and the assembly is placed in a machine, Fig. 9, which acts both to deform the other end of member 2 and to inject elastomeric material either simultaneously or successively. Finally, at least the ends of member 2 are further deformed in a press (Fig. 10, not shown) to relieve any tension in the elastomer caused by cooling. The bore of the outer member 2 may be, as in Fig. 1, of substantially the same diameter as the inner member 1. In this case, the central part of the bore is expanded to give the outer member a barrel shape (Fig. 2, not shown) before the first enddeforming operation. If the cylindrical outer member's bore substantially exceeds the inner member's diameter, this preliminary expansion is unnecessary but the degree of inward deformation of the ends is greater.
