Abstract

731,436. Velocitymodulated tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 5, 1953 [June 5, 1952], No. 14173/52. Class 39 (1). A klystron has a hollow resonator comprising two annular portions mounted about a common central axis and separated from each other by an annular gap lying in a plane transverse that axis and through which electrons flow in a radial direction, the resonator portions being arranged to be relatively axially movable so as to vary the gap capacity and so tune the resonator. In one embodiment annular concave cathode 1, Fig. 3, reflector 2 with focusing flanges 3, and resonator portion 4a are mounted rigidly on an insulating wafer 6 which is attached to the glass base via rods 8. Complementary resonator portion 4 is rigidly attached by means of rods 14 to plate 15 which is connected via corrugated disc 17 to flange 16. Axial motion of 4 is obtained by turning screw 18. Diaphragms 10 ensure parallel movement. The cathode and reflector may be interchanged, the cathode taking the form of a concave cylinder, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the reflector having flanges projecting radially inward toward the cathode. The wafer 6 may alternatively be supported by low temperature-expansion rods from the periphery of 15, thus compensating the effect of expansion of the glass envelope 20. In another modification both halves of the resonator may be mounted on flexible diaphragms. More than one resonator may be so tuned. Specification 577,037 is referred to.
