Abstract
731,427. Desensitizing explosives. HER CULES POWDER CO. Aug. 15, 1951, No 19308/51. Class 9(2). Water insoluble liquid explosive nitric esters are desensitized by adding a water soluble, substantially non-volatile compound having at least 3 carbon atoms and a structural formula X-O (R-O)n-Y where R is an alkylene, ketoalkylene or hydroxyalkylene group having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, X and Y are alkyl, ketoalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, acyl or oxysubstituted acyl groups or hydrogen, and n is an integer from 1 to 10, the amount of desensitizing agent being such that the sensitivity of the solution is not greater than that of a 25 per cent solution of the compound in nitroglycerine. The desensitizers may be water-extracted, and those specified are diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol and other diols, poly-ethylene and-propylene glygols, dimethoxytetraglycol mono- and di-alkyl glycol ethers, hydroxy-ethyl acetate, bis (methoxyethyl) acetal and formal, diethylene glycol ethers and methoxyethyl acetoxyethyl ether. Ethyl centralite and nitrodiphenylamine may be present as stabilizers. Examples of explosives are nitroglycerine, dinitroglycerine, ethylene glycol dinitrate, diethylene glycol dinitrate, nitroisobutylglycerol trinitrate and 1, 2, 4- butanetriol trinitrate.
