Abstract

731,205. Pit props. KRAUT, H., and DOELL, W. March 26, 1953 [March 27, 1952], No. 8333/53. Class 20 (2). A stanchion, pit prop or like load carrying element consists of a pair of telescopic members in which the force acting to close the members one into the other is applied as an upthrust to a settled mass of granular material which fills only partially a hollow space within one of the members. A pit prop consists of an upper prop member a having an annular space d which slidably receives an abutment f formed on the upper edge of the lower prop member e. The granular material g, such as sand or steel shot, is supported on the abutment f and partly fills the space d. The prop is initially set by a wedge h being passed through slots in the lower member e, this assembly operation causing the granular material to be shaken down into a settled state. Thereafter the wedge h is removed, and load on the prop is taken by the granular material. In order to collapse the prop, air is injected through the pipe i into the space d, which disperses or unsettles the granular material to break down its holding effect.
