Abstract

730,684. Hydraulic shock absorbers. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd. Dec. 14, 1953 [March 4, 1953], No. 5973/53. Class 108 (3). The part of the recuperation chamber of a telescopic hydraulic shock absorber, which becomes hottest during operation, is provided with external secondary heattransfer surfaces constituted by an assemblage of metal fins 12, the flanges 12a of which, serve as spacing means for the fins, and afford a greater area of contact for conduction of heat from the chamber to the fins. The fins may be of elliptical, square, or annular, shape. According to the Provisional Specification, the heat-transfer surfaces may comprise metallic foil, gauze, braid, or coiled wire. The foil &c. may be formed with corrugations disposed axially of the shock absorber. Alternatively, the casing of the shock absorber may be corrugated, and may be surrounded by a metal cylinder. Air may be pumped along the channels formed by the corrugations by the action of the usual dust-excluding sleeve carried by the piston rod, or by a rubber bellows. In the latter case, the foil &c. may be replaced by cooling fins, which extend the whole length of the recuperation chamber. The inner edge of each fin is recessed at intervals to accommodate longitudinally-extending air ducts.
