Abstract

[Also in Group XXX] A machine for inserting solids and liquids into containers comprises a liquidfilling head having means for moving containers round a circular path and means for inserting a predetermined quantity of liquid into each container, a solids-filling head having means for moving containers round a circular path and means for inserting a predetermined quantity of solids into each container, and means for transferring containers from the liquid-filling head to the solids-filling head. Cans from a conveyer 31 are engaged in succession by recesses 9 in a star-wheel 8 on a rotating shaft 4, a series of cam-actuated piston and cylinder means 11 also carried by the starwheel, partly fill the cans with liquid as described in Specification 729,120. The cans containing liquid are transferred from the star wheel 8 by a turret 32 to a star wheel 46 on a shaft 41 which moves the cans under a stationary plate 49, ported at 50 for the supply of solids, e.g. peas, to the cans. Above the plate 49 upper and lower plates 44, 43 carrying a series of telescoping cylinders 52, 51 corresponding to the recesses of the star wheel 46, are also secured to the shaft 41, the upper plate 44 being axially adjustable to vary the volume of the composite cylinders 51, 52. The arrangement is such that the cylinders are filled with solids by passing under a hopper 53 and are discharged into the cans passing beneath the discharge port 50 in the plate 49.
