Abstract

728,972. Hydraulic turbines; centrifugal pumps. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Sept. 18, 1953 [Sept. 19, 1952], No. 23564/52. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). [Also in Group XXII] In a runner for a hydraulic turbine or pump having mixed radial and axial flow, the shroud ring is made by welding from two portions, the portion adjacent the axial-flow part of the runner consisting of material, or having a surface, more resistant to cavitation than that of the portion adjacent the radial flow. In the Francis turbine runner shown in Fig. 1, the crown 1 and the radial-flow portion 2 of the shroud ring are castings or fabrications of mild steel, while the blades 3 are of mild steel plate clad on the convex side, at least near the axialflow portion 5 of the shroud ring, with a layer 4 of stainless steel. The axial-flow portion 5 is formed from a strip of mild steel plate clad on the inside with a layer 6 of stainless steel and rolled into cylindrical or frusto-conical shape. It may instead be of solid stainless steel. The portions 2, 5 are connected by welds 7, 8. The vanes 3 may be welded to the stainless steel cladding 6 or to the solid stainless steel of the portion 5 by stainless steel welds on both sides of each vane. Alternatively, the cladding 6 may be removed, as shown in Fig. 3, at the juncture with the vanes 3, and mild steel welds 11, 12 applied to attach the chamfered edge 10 of each vane to the portion 5. A weld 13 of stainless steel is then applied to form a continuation of the claddings 4, 6.
