Abstract

A reagent for use in the quantitative determination of water in gases, liquids, or solids, comprises a solution in methyl alcohol of iodine and sulphur dioxide, to which has been added an alcoholate, phenolate, or salt of an organic acid, which serves to bind the hydrogen ions produced during the water determination. Sodium, potassium, calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, or zinc salts may be used. In examples, sodium methylate, sodium phenolate, sodium acetate, or a mixture of sodium acetate and zinc acetate are added. The reagent may also contain sodium iodide.
