Abstract
Reagents for the chemical determination of water of the Karl Fischer type, i.e. comprising a halogen and a substance instantly reacting therewith in presence of water, which deteriorate during storage by spontaneous reaction in absence of water are stabilized by addition of one or more end-products of this reaction in quantity sufficient to bring it to the equilibrium point. These products may be added as such, or produced in situ by the addition of substances producing them. For example, a Karl Fischer reagent containing iodine and sulphur dioxide as active reagents and methanol and pyridine as subsidiary ingredients is found to deteriorate in the absence of water by a reaction between iodine, sulphur dioxide and methanol producing iodide ions. Stabilization is therefore effected either by adding an iodide, e.g. pyridine hydro-iodide, or by producing an iodide in the mixture, e.g. by the controlled addition of water, so that the ratio of iodide ions to molecular iodine is about 3.2.
