Abstract

728,494. Dish-washing machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 26, 1953 [Nov. 28, 1952], No. 32878/53. Class 138 (1). A dish-washing machine comprises a tub 1, Fig. 1, for containing the articles to be washed in a quantity of liquid, an impeller 2 driven by a motor 4, the impeller being disposed adjacent a wall of the tub, a drainage opening 14 in the wall about the impeller axis, a cylindrical valve body 15 associated with the impeller for rotation therewith, the valve body extending from the impeller to encircle the opening 14 in close proximity with said wall and having about its circumference a plurality of openings 16, Fig. 2, disposed adjacent said wall, and a plurality of flapper valves 17 pivotally carried by the valve body 15 interiorly thereof for co-operation each into a valve opening 16, the flapper valves 17 being biased away from their associated openings to permit flow of liquid therethrough to the opening 14 when the impeller is at rest, but responding to centrifugal forces when the im. peller is rotated to move against the valve body 15 to close said openings 16. The valve body 15 is frictionally held in the inside of the hub of the impeller 2 and the flapper valves 17 are moulded integrally with the body 15 which is composed of an elastomeric material. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the openings 16 are rectangular and are-also open adjacent the bottom wall of the tub 1. The flapper valves .17 are longer than the openings 16, to overlap the latter, and to prevent them passing through the openings. In a modification, Fig. 4, the flapper valves 17.1 are pivotal about horizontal axes and the walls of the openings 16.1 and the edges of the valves are bevelled in such a manner as to prevent the valves 17.1 passing through the openings 16.1. The dish-washer is of the type having a front opening with a door pivotal about its lower horizontal edge, and wherein a timed cycle of operations is performed. Specification 557,034 is referred to.
