Abstract

[Also in Groups V and XVII] In a machine in which layers or strips of sheet material are pressed or sealed together between a pair of relatively-movable crimping dies, at least one of the dies is formed in two parts interconnected by a spherical joint, whereby the operative faces of the dies are self-aligning. If the material is heat-sealable, one or both dies may be heated. As shown, the upper die C comprises parts 6 and 7 separated by a layer of heatinsulating material 8 and secured together by a tubular screw 9, the part 6 being mounted on a pivot 17 so that the die may be swung upwardly for inspection purposes, and the part 7 carrying a serrated die block 46 detachably secured by a screw 48. The lower die D is mounted on guide rods 3 for reciprocation by toggle mechanism (not shown) and includes an upper part comprising two sections 26, 27 separated by a sheet of heat-insulating material 28, and a lower part 25 fitted with a ring 36 having a spherical bearing surface 37. The latter engages a similar surface on the lower race 38 of a ball-bearing 41 whose upper race 40 is secured to the section 26, the centre of the spherical surfaces lying in the plane of the face of the co-operating die block which is secured to the section 27 by a screw 49. The parts of the lower die are held together by a bolt 29 encircled by a spring 35 disposed between the nut 33 and a plate 34 secured to the part 25. To ensure parallelism between the faces of the die blocks, the lower die is fitted with four abutment posts 53 co-operating with screws 52 on the upper die, each screw being provided with a scale 54 for adjustment purposes. The die blocks may be heated electrically by elements 59 connected to bus-bars 61 mounted in extensions of the sheets 8 and 28.
