Abstract

728,427. Casting composite articles. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 4, 1953 [Aug. 8, 1952], No. 21424/53. Class 83 (1). A method of impregnatnating only selected portions of a porous metal part with a metal of lower melting point than that of the part to be impregnated, comprises placing a predetermined quantity of impregnating metal adjacent the portion of the porous part to be impregnated, selectively heating the impregnating metal and only that portion of the part which is to be impregnated, to a temperature above the melting point of the impregnating metal and below that of the metal of the porous part, while maintaining the remainder of the porous part at a temperature below. the melting point of the impregnating metal, and maintaining said heating for a time sufficient to allow infiltration of the melted impregnating metal into the heated portion of said porous metal part, whereby the impregnating metal only infiltrates into that portion of the porous part which is above the melting point of the impregnating metal. In the preferred arrangement, the parts are heated by induction heating, but flame heating may be used. The impregnating metal should not alloy appreciably with the metal of the porous part, and lead and its alloys may be used for bronze, copper-nickel or iron porous parts, and cupreous metals for iron parts. The invention is described with reference to the impregnation of a portion 30 of a compressor rotor 20.
