Abstract

728,323. Mixing appliances. NAUTA, J. E. March 6, 1953 [March 8, 1952], No. 6346/53. Class 86. In a mixing machine of the kind described in Specification 599,900, liquid from a supply main enters the mixing vessel through an aperture in the lower end of the side wall, the aperture having a closure device for preventing the material in the vessel from penetrating into the aperture during periods when no liquid is being supplied to the apertures. In Fig. 1, liquid is pumped from a tank 25 into a supply main 26 which communicates periodically with each of three apertures 47 spaced 120 degrees from one another around the vessel 1. The supply of liquid to the apertures 47 is controlled by a three-way cock 35 which is rotated by a chain drive 41 in synchronism with the rotation of the crank arm 7 so that liquid passes through an aperture when the worm 2 is in positions adjacent to and diametrically opposite that aperture. Each aperture 47 is formed as a horizontal slit in a member 50, Fig. 3, which carries a cylinder 48 containing a piston 49. The piston 49 is provided with a pin 53 having at its free end a sheet-like member 54 which exactly fits the slit 47. On the other side, a spring 56 urges the piston towards the vessel 1 so that the member 54 enters and obturates the slit 47. When Irquid supplied under pressure from the main 26 enters the cylinder 48, via ducts 34, 60, it moves the piston 49 against the spring 56 so that the obturating member 54 is withdrawn from the slit 47 allowing liquid to pass into the vessel 1. When the supply of. liquid is shut off, the spring 56 again moves the obturating member 54 into the slot 47. Any liquid which leaks past the piston 49 is returned to the tank 25 by a conduit 62. If necessary, more than three slits 47 may be provided and round instead of slit-like inlet openings may be used. A separate cock for each slit 47 may be used instead of the common cock 35, in which case it is possible to supply a different quantity of liquid to a slit opening according to whether the crank arm 7 is directed towards the slit, or in the opposite direction thereto. When a small amount of liquid is to be supplied, it may be introduced into the vessel with air or carbonic acid gas so that its supply is spread out over a longer period.
