A surgical appliance comprises an elastic waistband a, b, c, d, f having a front portion d for exerting upward pressure on the abdomen and having upwardly diverging lateral extensions c, f. One extension is connected to the waistband portion b and this terminates in a fastener for engagement with the portion f. The frontal part may carry pockets' to receive padding material whereby local pressure may be increased as desired. The belt is reinforced by a further elastic strip g extending for its whole length.
