Abstract

Rubber is bonded to a transparent polymeric material having active hydrogen containing groups by applying a polyisocyanate, a polyisothiocyanate or a mixed isocyanate-isothiocyanate between the two materials before the rubber is vulcanized and then applying heat and pressure to vulcanize the rubber and effect the bond. The isocyanate compound may be triphenylmethane tri-isocyanate, 1, 6 hexane diisocyanate, 1, chloro phenylene 2, 4 diisocyanate or 1, 5 naphthalene diisocyanate. The polymeric material may be cellulose acetate, cellulose acetobutyrate, ethyl cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol. Preferably the rubber is first bonded to a polymeric material which may be plasticized by dimethyl phthalate by the process of the invention and then adhesion made to the main polymeric material by a cementing or a heat welding process. In an example a suspension in petrol is made from smoked sheet rubber, mercaptobenzthiazole, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur, carbon black and a polyisocyanate and the suspension applied between rubber and the edge of a layer of cellulose acetate sheet. The suspension is allowed to dry, cold moulded between polished plates to avoid deforming the cellulose acetate sheets, and finally cured in a heated press. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 578,019 and 604,834.
