Abstract

<PICT:0727286/III/1> <PICT:0727286/III/2> <PICT:0727286/III/3> In apparatus for treating finely-divided solids 12 in a relatively deep fluidized bed flowing horizontally through a chamber having a permeable floor 10 through which fluidizing medium passes upwardly, e.g. an electric tunnel kiln for calcining alumina upstanding baffles 15 and depending baffles 16 are provided at intervals, the space between each pair of which has an impermeable part 17 of the floor immediately below it. Each baffle may be of triangular cross-section. In one form, Fig. 2, the face 42 is inclined to the vertical and in another form, Fig. 3, it is vertical. In each form the faces may be curved slightly. The lower part 46 of the baffle 16, Fig. 3, is parallel to the inclined face 41 of the baffle 15. A small volume of gas is introduced into the material through a perforated tube 47 disposed adjacent the lower edge of the part 46. The perforations in the tube direct the gas substantially vertically. The baffles divide the kiln into zones C, D, E, F. The material is heated gradually from 230 DEG F. to 900 DEG F. in zone C and from 900 DEG F. to 2,000 DEG F. in zone D. It is then cooled from 2,000 DEG F. to 900 DEG F. in zone E and from 900 DEG F. to 230 DEG F. in zone F. When the kiln is used for roasting low-sulphide ores, the zones serve to separate gases of different chemical composition and for obtaining fractions of gas having various concentrations of valuable components. The apparatus may be used also in the chlorination of titanium ores and the calcination of petroleum coke.
