726,859. Retaining walls &c. SOC. PER AZIONI OFFICINE MACCAFERRI GIA RAFFAELE MACCAFERRI & FIGLI. May 1, 1953, No. 12126/53. Class 68(2). A basket or gabion for forming river, mountain and sea defensive structures, comprises a casing of wire cloth to be filled with rubble, stone or like material, the marginal edges of the wire cloth being reinforced by a rod or straight or braided wire generally thicker than the cloth wire and which is secured thereto by twisting the ends of the cloth edge wires around the rod or wire. The baskets comprise rectangular sections of wire cloth R each secured to a rod or wire V by twisting the ends C about the rod, the sections being joined together to make a complete casing as in Fig. 4 with a lid I, sides II and IV and bottom III joined to ends T by wire stitching and the whole may be reinforced further by braces 10 and 11 of wire anchored to the wire cloth R. A number of such baskets are laid parallel to form a foundation and a further number are laid transversely on top of them. As shown in Figs. 6 and 9, the baskets 13 for laying transversely on top of the parallel baskets 12, which have no lids, are formed with only one end T except for the end basket so that there is only one thickness of wire cloth between baskets and the lids are replaced by flanges F or F<SP>1</SP> which cover the baskets of the next lower layer. A machine for twisting the ends C of the wire cloth R about the rod V comprises pairs of gears, one of each pair being keyed to a motor shaft and the other having projecting hubs seated in supports between adjacent gears and each gear having a radial slit and a radial hole aligned therewith and the supports having a corresponding slit. The set of gears are arranged so that each gear is opposite an end C when untwisted and, with the slits in gears and supports aligned, the wire cloth is introduced into the slits with the ends C in the radial holes and the rod V in the slits on the axis of the gears so that rotation of the gears twists the ends C about the rod V. The wires and wire cloth may be zinc-plated or coated with a plastic substance, such as a vinyl plastic, by extrusion or drawing and/or by dipping the wire cloth.
