Abstract

726,690. Bonding non-metallic material. LONZA ELEKTRIZITATSWERKE UND CHEMISCHE FABRIKEN AKT.-GES. Feb. 16, 1953 [April 16, 1952], No. 4268/53. Class 42 (1). Plastic parts, the material of which is composed at least in part of polymethylmethacrylate, e.g. the cap and base of a container, are bonded together by swelling at least one of the surfaces to be joined with a solution of trichloracetic acid in a solvent which swells but does not dissolve polymethylmethacrylate, and then lightly pressing the surfaces together. The ensuing joint is stated to be free from cracks and cloudiness. The solvent for the trichloracetic acid may be glacial acetic acid or some other low molecular weight fatty acid such as propionic or butyric acid.
