Abstract

726,654. Control systems for lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WILLIAMS, C. E. Nov. 28, 1951 [Nov. 29, 1950], No. 29251/50. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXIX] An electric circuit arrangement for operating and dimming one or more lamps, particularly, but not exclusively, low-pressure discharge lamps, 55 ... 57, comprises a transformer 4 whose primary winding 3 is connected in series with the A.C. winding 62 of a regulating transductor 61 to A.C. supply terminals 1, 2, and connections from the primary winding or a secondary winding 10 of the transformer 4 to supply operating current to the lamp(s), said connections including, in series with the lamp(s), the A.C. winding(s) of one or more dimming transductors 58 . . . 60 and rectifying means 16 which, responsive to the flow of lamp-operating current, feeds D.C. through the D.C. winding 78 of the regulating transductor 61; this arrangement is such that, e.g., when the dimming transductors 58 ... 60 are operated to increase the lamp current, the increased D.C. output from the rectifier 16 decreases, due to core saturation, the impedance of regulating transductor A.C. winding 62, whereby to increase the voltage across the transformer 4 and hence that across the lamp-operating circuit, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the dimming transductors. As shown, the lamp electrodes 69 ... 74 are supplied with heating current by secondary windings 63 ... 68 associated with the regulating transductor A.C. winding 62 whereby increasing lamp current results in decreasing output from such secondary windings. In other embodiments, the electrode heating windings are wound on the main transformer 4, or on a separate transformer whose primary winding is made lamp current responsive by a separate transductor, or on a separate transductor which is itself similarly responsive. The invention is also applicable to a plurality of series-connected lamps.
