Abstract

726,535. Fused electrolyte cells. HALKYN DISTRICT UNITED MINES, Ltd., and NEWALL, A. P. Jan. 21, 1952, No. 1643/52. Class 41. In a cell, particularly for the electrolysis of fused lead chloride containing metalliferous materials containing lead sulphide, the con-, tainer is composed of, or has a lining of mineral talc or mineral steatite. In the cell shown the side walls 1 and bottom 2 are of fire-brick and the side walls are lined from top to bottom with steatite 3; the side walls and bottom may alternatively be of sillimanite. The cover 4 may be of asbestos, steel, fire-brick or other material. End electrodes 5, 6 and intermediate bipolar electrodes 7 of graphite or carbon are arranged at a slight inclination to the vertical. Lead deposited on the cathode surfaces runs down and collects in a gutter 10 at one side of the cell from which it is removed by an outlet 8 or syphon. Sulphur vapour is removed at 9. Chlorine is introduced at 12 to inhibit the formation of or to remove scum on the side walls of the cell. In a modification the talc or steatite lining is applied only to those parts of the interior side walls which lie a few inches above and below the normal electrolyte level. The cell may be provided with an inner compartment as described in Specification 448,328 for the addition of galena to the electrolyte. Specification 726,536 also is referred to.
