726,410. Electromagnetic brakes. SOC. ANON. A. CITROEN. Oct. 21, 1953 [Nov. 6, 1952], No. 29064/53. Class 35. An electromag netic brake comprises a fixed outer cylindrical member A of magnetic material having at its sides two non - magnetic rings C carrying magnetic sector parts D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP>, D<SP>3</SP> and D 1 <SP>1</SP>, D 2 <SP>1</SP>, D 3 <SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1 (not shown), and an inner member which is arranged for limited angular displacement relative to its shaft E and which includes a magnetic cylinder F having at its sides two non-magnetic rings K carrying magnetic sector parts L 1 , L 2 , L 3 and L 1 <SP>1</SP>, L 2 <SP>1</SP>, L 3 <SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1 (not shown). The magnetic sector parts are so arranged to overlap radially one another as to enable the sector parts on one support to engage between the sector parts on the other support. The fixed member A carries a winding B which, when energized, causes the required braking of the shaft E due to the attraction of the sector parts on one support by the sector parts on the other support. In order to obtain the mentioned limited angular displacement of the inner member F relative to its shaft E, two opposing springs H, J are fitted between the shaft E and the member F, while the latter always remains centred by means of a ball or other bearing G. The springs H and J may be of the leaf type or coiled type, as in Fig. 4 (not shown). The brake can also be arranged to act in the shaft E through a gearing so as to increase the number of retaining actions during each revolution of the shaft E. It is also stated that a damping device may be provided to regulate the braking operation.
