Abstract

A polyvinyl pyrrolidone-iodine composition is produced by thoroughly mixing elemental iodine and powdered polymeric 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and heating the mixture, preferably at 90-100 DEG C., until the ratio of available iodine to iodide ion in the composition is substantially 2 : 1. The iodine is stated to be present in the composition as available iodine, iodide ion and bound iodine and methods of determining the percentage of each are described. Specification 680,968, [Group VI], is referred to.ALSO:A composition which provides iodine in a germicidally and bactericidally active form, is produced by thoroughly mixing elemental iodine and powdered polymeric 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and heating the mixture, preferably to 90-100 DEG C., until the ratio of available iodine to iodide ion in the composition is substantially 2 : 1. The iodine is stated to be present in the composition as available iodine, iodide ion and bound iodine and methods of determining the percentage of each are described.
