Abstract

726,185. Changing wave shape. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 23, 1953 [March 25, 1952], No. 7647/52. Class 38 (2). To a circuit for producing a train of pulses in a substantially resistive load R from an A.C. source G, of the kind forming the subject of Specification 666,575, in which an inductor L and capacitor C, resonant at the supply frequency, are connected in series across the supply, and a saturable inductor and load R are connected in series across capacitor C, the addition is made of a saturable capacitor D connected in parallel with load R. While the current in saturable inductor P is building up, capacitor D is unsaturated, and short-circuits load R, but when it reaches its maximum value, capacitor D saturates and the current is diverted suddenly through load R to give a much sharper pulse. The following conditions must be fulfilled: the unsaturated and the saturated inductance of P must respectively be much greater and much less than the inductance of L, the unsaturated and the saturated capacity of D must respectively be much greater and much less than the capacity of C, P and D must respectively saturate when the voltage across C, and the current in P, are at their maxima, and the value of R must be suitable. To produce a train of unidirectional pulses the inductor P and, if necessary, capacitor C, may be polarized by current and voltage respectively, Fig. 4 (not shown).
