[Also in Groups XVI and XXV] An assembly for applying pressure to a moving web comprises a roller for pressing on the web, carried at one end of a frame having at its other end a cylindrical bearing parallel to the roller axis and supported in a non-circular shaft which fills the bearing only in the direction of feed of the web whereby the frame and roller may tip transversely of the path of the web while being restrained from swinging edgewise thereof. In the photographic imbibition printing machine shown in Fig. 1, a gelatine relief matrix M is registered with a blank film B on a pin belt P and rolled between a number of pairs of rollers such as 1, 14, one, 14, of each pair rotating on a fixed axis and one, 1, being movably mounted according to the invention. Pressure is applied to the movably mounted rollers from hydraulic cylinders such as 10 supplied through pipes 42, 43, 44 and reducing valves such as 39. The pressure is released during passage of a splice detected by a photoelectric device 47 co-operating with a light source 46 and acting through a time delay relay on an electrically operated valve 38. Two rollers, 26 and 34, are provided with belts 28, 33. Each movable roller such as 1, is mounted on a spindle carried on arms 2, Fig. 3, integral with a cylindrical bearing member 3 containing a bushing 8 and mounted on a fixed spindle 4, of the section shown in Fig. 5. The section provides a pair of surfaces 4a, having only a small clearance in the bushing and intermediate surfaces 4b with larger clearance.
