Abstract

725,561. Friction clutches. FEDERAL FAWICK CORPORATION. Jan. 20, 1953, No. 1620/53. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXXIV] Segmental friction shoes 29, contracted radially into clutch or brake engagement with an underlying driven drum 14 by a fluid-distensible rubber annulus 13, which alone sustains the whole of the friction torque, are spaced from annulus-mounted carriers 24 by corrugated spacers 30 to provide a passage for cooling air circulated by radially inclined grooves 27 in the side-faces of an outer driving ring 10 to which the rubber annulus is vulcanized, and the carriers 24 have outwardly curved and joggled sides 24a, spaced from the annulus, for deflecting friction sparks away from it. The carriers are secured to the rubber annulus by axial pins 23, and have welded internal axial lugs 26 in torque-transmitting engagement with grooves in the rubber. The spacers 30 are welded to the carriers 24 and to plates 31 to which the friction shoes 29 are riveted. Two clutches are shown for a forward-reverse gear, the flange-bolted outer driving rings 10 being interchangeable, for which purpose they are of outwardly open channel section with diametrically opposite blocks 16, 16 and 18, 18 in the channels for fluid passage.
