Abstract

725,548. Variable load braking apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 16, 1953 [March 10, 1953], No. 35020/53. Class 103 (1). The invention relates to a valve assembly for variable load braking apparatus in vehicles and as shown it operates to pass air from a supply port 4 connected to the brake cylinder to an outlet port 10 connected to a variable volume chamber. Supply port 4 is connected to a supply chamber 5 and outlet port 10 to an outlet chamber 6, communication between the chambers 5 and 6 being controlled by a valve 9 urged against a seat 8 by a light spring 11. The valve may be lifted off its seat by a spindle 12 operated by thrust through a member 38' of a leafspring arm 47 having a fixed pivot at one end and connected at the other end by link 50 to a spring buckle 49 of the vehicle. Since the valve is operative to pass air from the brake cylinder into a variable volume chamber, it is arranged that the spring arm 47 shall take up a position 51 if the vehicle is empty, and is moved to a position 52 as the vehicle becomes loaded so that the thrust on spindle 12 is thus reduced and there is less tendency to open the valve 9 to pass air to the variable volume chamber. If the valve was operative for passing air directly to the brake cylinder, it would be necessary to make the valve open increasingly with load. Since the pressure in the outlet chamber 6 is operative upon the right hand side of a diaphragm member 19 secured to the valve spindle, the valve tends to close as soon as a pressure proportionate to the vehicle load has been attained. Movements of the valve spindle are damped by plates 26 and 27 secured thereto which displace liquid in chambers 24 and 25 through a restriction 22. In a further embodiment described in which the valve is used to vary the pressure in a reservoir, an exhaust port is formed by an axial bore through the valve spindle
